WVGS Classes/Workshops


To help you with your Genealogy, we offer a variety of basic-advanced Genealogy related classes/workshops.  Sessions are held in our Library in our Traditional classroom and our New PC classroom. We cover the ins and outs of Genealogy, Genealogy Libraries, Genealogy Computer Programs, Technology Aids, Preserving Memories and Photos.

NOVICE GENEALOGY


This class will focus on the first steps needed to get you started on your research. No prior knowledge is necessary. There will be a new class the 3rd Friday of each month.


Friday, 1-3:30 PM, every 3rd Friday unless noted.

Using the WVGS Library for your Research


This class takes you step by step on how to research your family at the WVGS Library. It will tell you how to apply what you learned in Research I & II by using our library. It includes reading the card catalog, searching the census, using PERSI to find articles in our collection of periodicals, using the map resources, and more.

Learn about researching at the Library of Congress, the National Archives, and the DAR Library. Connie Sheets will tell you about what each venue holds. She will also tell you about the books we have in our library that will help you with your research.

Got a Brick Wall? It might be because you need to analyze the sources you already have more carefully. Bring 2 source documents from your files and join us to explore how to understand and cite them.

Beginning DNA for Genealogy


This class will focus on autosomal DNA- the DNA which includes all your ancestral lines. A brief look at chromosomes and types of DNA, DNA from one generation to the next (Did I get all of great grandma’s DNA?) and testing companies.
